Santa Lucia

MONTEPULCIANO

The plan of the church, that was built in 1653 ,is attributed to Flaminio del Turco. The fancy travertine facade , divided in two sections, that are in turn divided in three parts, unites structural styles and Late Mannerism decorations in a composite exuberance ,typical of Roman Baroque. Especially theatrical is the portal, framed by columns with Ionic festooned capitals. Their jambs are decorated with curled spirals from which hang large fruit pendants. The one nave interior, hosts a wooden Crucifix by Giovan Battista Alessi, Saint Girolamo, Saint Margaret, Saint Lawrence, Saint Agnese by Gaetano Perpignani and a Madonna with Child by Luca Signorelli. Underneath the present church, there are traces of a building that dates back to the XIIth century.
