Santa Maria dei Servi

MONTEPULCIANO

It presents a gabled facade, with travertine hewn stones set up in regular files and enriched by a splaying portal with a lancet arch surmounted by a gable. The sloping sides of the roof are decorated by a series of three foiled hanging arches, supported by small protruding structures. The bell tower in brickwork, with slender mullioned windows with pilasters on the side dates back to 1700. The one nave interior was restructured between the end of 1600 and the beginning of 1700. The restructuring began in 1701, with the restoration of the major altar in 1702. The restoration was completed in 1712. Andrea Pozzo realized the design for the stuccos that decorate the surfaces, but probably didn’t supervise the construction site. Inside there are, a fresco representing the Madonna della Santoreggia, by Sienese artists, dated XIVth century, a Madonna with Child , attributed to Duccio di Buoninsegna’s pupils and a fresco depicting a Crucifix, dated 1300.
