Oratorio di Sant'Antonio

SAN CASCIANO DEI BAGNI


Adjacent to the Cathedral , the Company of Saint Anthony founded between the end of the XVth century and the beginning of the XVIth century had its headquarters. The Company also owned two Spedali ( welcome Centers), one in the village, the other next to the Church of the Virgin Mary da Balnea or from Colonna alle Terme. Each Spedale was presided by a “spedaliere”, elected by the Council of the Company. The church of Saint Anthony also underwent various architectural changes, especially during the XVIIIth century. In 1741, the staircase, that connected it to the Cathedral and that originally was located on the side of the central altar dedicated to Saint Lawrence and Saint Cassiano, was removed. In 1748, major restoration works took place, that modified the interior of the church, that adopted a Baroque style thanks to the realization of a circular apse and to the columns, painted to resemble a travertine surface. The XVIth century portal is the original one, belonging to the adjacent Cathedral. Its removal, dates back to 1948, when it was replaced with the present Gothic portal, found on the wall that divides the oratory from the Cathedral. The building has a single nave with three late Baroque altars. On the major altar, there’s the Baroque wooden statue of the Virgin Mary, completed gilded .
