IL POGGIO
SAN CASCIANO DEI BAGNI
"Il Poggio", an Agritourism Farm is tucked away in the tranquillity of the splendid Sienese countryside, between the Val D'Orcia and the Val di Chiana, on a hill overlooking the nearby medieval village of Celle sul Rigo and with breathtaking views over the Valle del Rigo as far as the imposing Fortress of Radicofani, Monte Amiata and Monte Cetona.
"Il Poggio" came into being through the joining of two traditionally-run family farms and began operating as farm holiday establishment in 1987. Initial restorations were carried out on the various barns and stables, starting in "Cantano", now heart of the farm's sport activities.
Following these renovations, further extensive work was started on a number of other buildings and areas, giving shape to what Il Poggio is today in its superb rural setting, perfectly located for short or longer restful country breaks aimed at the "gusto" of fresh clean air, extraordinary scenes, healthy Tuscan home cooking and, above all, to experience that special sense of well-being that only a farm stay can offer through its unique way of life that is authentic family farming.
On arrival guests are warmly welcomed at the Reception in what was the main historical farmhouse and which, completely restored, now has five comfortable, well furnished suites on the first floor. A restaurant is on the ground floor offering delicious local dishes, professionally served, though in a relaxed and friendly manner, in the once-upon-a-time old farm environment and strictly using fresh, intensely flavoured organic products straight off the Poggio farm.
The farming estate also breeds the "Cinta Senese", a native Saddleback pig, raised "primitively" for centuries in the Sienese countryside and which is still bred wild in the woods to survive extinction. A great assortment of cereal crops, amongst which spelt, olives and a rich variety of grapes are additionally cultivated on the farm. These products, as well as the "Danfi" pecorino cheese, matured in the "caciaia" - a special room for ageing cheese - can be bought at the farm's gastronomic boutique and taken home to be enjoyed after your holiday is over.
Next to the main farmhouse there are two swimming pools, one with an area for children in which to play safely to their hearts' content.
The "Borgo", a stone's throw off from the main reception area, is an authentic rural hamlet built in full respect of the original style of these picturesque villages, with small independent self-catering apartments set around an internal courtyard and square thus forming a real homely encompassing atmosphere.
"Il Poggio" is particularly specialised in riding holidays and employs fully qualified expert instructors for beginners wishing to learn this exhilarating sport and wishing to engage in horseback excursions in the peaceful countryside, along with the more experienced riders. Much effort is taken to reward all the riders and guests alike of fun as well as lastng friendships, whether old or new.
All the suites and apartments are named after one of the horses, dogs, or Poggio Estates.
In taking great pride in the quality of the services offered, and wishing to share with you the true taste of country living at its best, we look forward to seeing you at "Il Poggio", together with any small family pets that wish to come along too!"Il Poggio", an Agritourism Farm is tucked away in the tranquillity of the splendid Sienese countryside, between the Val D'Orcia and the Val di Chiana, on a hill overlooking the nearby medieval village of Celle sul Rigo and with breathtaking views over the Valle del Rigo as far as the imposing Fortress of Radicofani, Monte Amiata and Monte Cetona.
