Costume parade and barrel race - Every year, the last Sunday of
August, the eight districts of Montepulciano compete at the &
quot; & Brav Igrave; or & quot ;: barrels a tough race in
which athletic participants push the barrels of 80 kg along a path
uphill. The word Brav & Igrave; or derived from vulgar Bravium
which indicates a cloth painted with the image of the patron saint
of the city & agrave ;: St. John the Beheaded, in whose honor
is held this race. Originally the Brav & Igrave; or was played
on horseback but was abolished in the seventeenth century for
reasons of public order. In times pi & ugrave; recently, the
inclusion of the barrels he wanted to be a strong appeal to a
typical product of the main Montepulciano Vino Nobile.
Before the race, the Piazza Grande are held important ceremonies such as' extraction of the starting order of the barrels, delivery of cloth Brav & Igrave; or the Magistrate of the Contrade and the offering of the votive candles to San Giovanni. The historical procession, made up of over 300 people fascinate & agrave; the public with the presence of ladies, knights, flag bearers and drummers. After the ringing of the bell of the town the barrels, from the column of the Marzocco, it will be made to roll between the picturesque streets of the old town until the arrival located in the churchyard of the Duomo in Piazza Grande. Late into the night to follow the celebrations of the winning district.
