In 1995, the Youth Association has proposed to organize a national
of the four districts: Bell, Gattineto, Porticciola and Pozzo,
establishing boundaries and promoting the creation of statutes that
govern the organizational structure. Were finally fixed the rules
for the conduct of the games between the districts, in order to
rediscover the festive atmosphere that marked the seasons of
"wetness" in the sixteenth-eighteenth centuries for the pleasure of
the many "bagnaioli" who came to take care with our thermal
waters.
Thus was born the Palio di San Cassiano. The festival is held the Sunday before the feast of St. Cassian (August 13), patron saint of San Casciano. The event begins with the formation of a procession, composed of representatives of the districts (captains, drummers, armed, players, ladies and gentlemen), all in Renaissance costumes, which, along a stretch of road that connects to San Casciano Terme, arrives at a gateway to the country and here receives, by the Grand Chamberlain of the Magistrate, for permission to enter within the walls. When he reached the square of the Collegiate Church of San Leonardo, the procession stops and the Magistrate here collects the oath of the Captains of the Contrade, while the Archpriest blesses the Palio. Thus begins the visit of the procession to the Contrade, each of which the Magistrate will light a torch to signal the start of the games.
During this day the town is decked with flags and decorated with typical tools of San Casciano dei Bagni. The district of the bell tower with the colors green and white as a symbol for the church tower of St. Leonard, on the day of the Palio in the beautiful Republic Square commemorates the market for cloth and organizes the sack race. The district of the port with the yellow and red crest and as the old port town is the old job of organizing the game and vincaiolo pentolaccia. The district's Well with the color blue and white crest that you will find the well of the district center of the square is the old blacksmith's work and organizes the game of tumbling. The district of Gattineto with the colors yellow and black emblem and as a cat with the staircase leading to the heart of the old district is the work of spinning wool and organizes the game of the maypole. The parade consists of drummers, guards, judges, banners, ladies, knights and challenging well-aligned and composed of heads towards the ancient port town on Via San Cassiano, where the spokesperson of the Magistrate in the name of it extends a greeting to all the districts, and permission to enter within the walls of village. Each game gives the winner four points from three points to two points in the third and fourth point, the district that at the end of these games is in first place will receive an acknowledgment dal'organizzazione and may start in the starting line " RACE OF FROG "while others will have a penalty just shifting the starting point in relation to the marks obtained in the four games.
The race with the frogs is the main game because it determines the actual winner of the Palio, is pushing a wheelbarrow up on arrival, with the particularity that a frog is placed on the floor that must remain in place throughout the journey. If the dog jumps off the floor of the wheelbarrow, the competitor must stop and retrieve the frog, only when he can again put back in the wheelbarrow.
Of course, the frog has to get to the finish line in perfect physical condition, on pain of disqualification of the Contrada.
The competitor who arrives first at the finish line in compliance with all regulations will be the winner of the Palio. But eventually the whole country will be celebrating because the purpose of this event is to unite all in fun.
