The old church dedicated to St. Martin stood in the main square, opposite the town hall. It was a very old church as evidenced by an instrument of 1195, actum Sartiani in Ecclesia S. Martini hole. Depended first by the monks of the Holy Trinity of Spineta and then by the Cistercians of Florence basket.
Maybe inside it was preserved the graves of feudal Counts Manenti of Sarteano, of Lombard origin, as the tombstone with the inscription Sepulcrum Comitis Burgarucij MCCIC. In 1841, during the demolition of the old church and its reconstruction, the tombstone was blocked under the loggia of the municipal building Sarteano.
The present church has the facade of travertine and brick with columns and Doric capitals. A nave, contains two paintings on wood by Jacopo di Mino del furrier, a Madonna and Child known as the Madonna of the Goldfinch (1344), and an altarpiece dedicated to the Madonna delle Grazie; an arched panel by Andrea di Niccolò with the Madonna and Child with Saints Rocco and Sebastiano (second half of the fifteenth century); the celebrated Sarteano Annunciation by Domenico Beccafumi (about 1545); the Visitation of the Virgin to St. Elizabeth of Matteo Rosselli (first half of the seventeenth century |); the Madonna and Child in glory and Alessandro Casolani saints (last quarter of the sixteenth century).
In the belfry there is still a bell with written in Gothic letters, dated 1282.
